Norway, home of the Lawson family.

Samuel Larson's family went by a number of names in Chicago before it settled down as Lawson, the name that he gave all of his children.  He departed from the Hytland farm in Bjerkreim, Norway, for Chicago and sailed from the port of Stavanger on March 16, 1853.  His wife was Bertine Borreson, but we know very little about her.   Their daughter was Minnie Lawson, who married Olaf Anda.

Svale Ståleson (Samuel Larson, Samuel Lawson)
Believed to be Svale Ståleson (Samuel Larson, Samuel Lawson)
Samuel Larson was born as Svale Ståleson (Hytland) on January 2, 1823, in Bjerkreim, Norway.  He died on January 22, 1801 and is buried in Chicago's Graceland Cemetery.  His parents were Ståle Larson (Kjørn) and Birte Sigbjørnsdatter (Vassbø) (Kalveskog).  We don't know when or where he was married, but at the time of the 1860 U.S. Census he was married to Bertine and living in Chicago.  From about 1865, Samuel and his wife lived in their house at 1116 W. Grand. New book about Svale and his ancestors.

An edition of the book with copies of all the Norwegian sources is available from the author.  Send an e-mail to the author.

One of the greatest joys of family history is the reunion of the U.S. family with the family from the old country.  Read this account of the reunion with Reidar Efteland, a descendant of one of Svale's brothers who stayed in Norway, which includes visits to ancestral sites:  Bjerkreim Reunion

Samuel and Bertine were recorded as members of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.

Samuel and Bertine are buried in Chicago's Graceland Cemetery.
