Dr. Thomas A. Dorsey, Pilgrim Baptist, 12-03-05 |
On January 6, 2006, Chicago's Pilgrim Baptist Church was consumed by fire. The church was designed by Louis Sullivan
and Dankmar Adler in 1890-1891. Built as the Kehilath Anshe Maariv synagogue (now in Hyde Park as K.A.M. Isaiah
Israel Temple), it became a church in 1922. It was the home of gospel music where Dr. Thomas A. Dorsey directed the
choir for many years.
On December 3, 2005, Gary Johnson and a friend spent an afternoon visiting and photographing the church. With them
was Tim Samuelson, the city's cultural historian. They always will be grateful to the deacon who unlocked the door,
showed them around and shared many personal memories, including memories of Dr. Dorsey. Tim Samuelson had worked on
a restoration of the church as well as on its landmark designation. He knew every inch of the building.
These are the photos from that visit. Even though it was a dark December, the light streamed into the sanctuary.
