For those who think small
Mexico is a beautiful country, but the thought of large resorts can put many people off.  Here is a list of alternatives.

First, Casa Riley in San Miguel de Allende.  We stayed there a few years ago, and we loved it.  San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Next, La Quinta Troppo in Zihuatanejo, overlooking Zihuatanejo Bay and a block from Las Gatas Beach.  We have not been there ourselves, but two friend from Chicago go there for a week every year to escape city life.  This is a very small hotel, without television -- more like a bed and breakfast.  It is owned by a New Zealand couple that spent time in Chicago.  The town is a fishing village, with little restaurants, a local craft market and a slow pace of life.  Only a lap pool, but the beach is nearby.  La Quinta Troppo
